The Molly Pine Show

February 7, 2012 James Riley

Lorraine Pope as "Molly Pine" in Episode #2 - "The Sons of Liberty." Lorraine also appeared on ABC's "Castle" just last night (2/6/2012)

The “reality” show below is a spoof.   Lorraine’s a good sport and let me pretend I was talking to her.  Wilson thought it was funny, so we’re making it available to Colony Bay Members, (join here!) but first a word about Lorraine and our cast.

I first met Lorraine at Jonathan Wilson’s office in Pasadena.  We had spent so much time casting Abraham Foxe, Noah Pine, Bob Wheedle and the rest of the redcoats for episode 1, that she came in at the very end of what seemed like 600 actors under consideration. (We continue to have a LOT of actors interested in being part of an 18th century production.)

Like Alex Oliver, who plays “Sarah Pine,” I knew I wanted to cast Lorraine right away, even before she started reading.  There’s a sly joyfulness about Lorraine, some keen social intelligence that leaves you wanting to stand by her at parties.   I worried that she might be too high energy for Molly Pine, but I sensed she had the smarts to pull pretty much anything off — and she has.   She and I are complete political opposites, but I genuinely get a kick out of her sense of fun.   At wrap parties, when I ask her if she’s okay to drive home, she does this hilarious yogic contortion that just lets you know she was drunk on life the whole time.

I think I have the particulars right on this:  Lorraine was raised in Connecticut, has a degree from Northeastern and has been known to chase a live possum through her apartment.   One day on the farm, when her scene was finished, she spent the whole afternoon picking raspberries (like two gallons of them) and sharing them at dinner.   She reminds me of a young, ravishing Lucille Ball and I find her dancey hand-antics reduce me to a giggling 8th grader.  Along with Janel Romero-Boose, one of our makeup artists, she’s just one of those women who brighten up the set and make it float along towards the wrap.

Before episode two, I was proud of a scene I wrote between Molly Pine and Rev. Silence Laud and I was excited to tell Lorraine, but she let me know she didn’t have enough lines in that episode.  She can be funny even when she’s being blunt.  One of the consequences of having so many talented people in the little town of Courage, is that we’re just going to have to keep writing episodes until Lorraine gets a full show.

Here’s my little improv…
