Heah, New England is our franchise..

Just one of the many indications of British troops deserting to New Hampshire. You think they hung out in Portsmouth, next to the rest of the regiment? Hmmm…  New Hampshire Gazette, May 5, 1769.  (Click Graphic for a larger version of the image.)
The dirty little secret about a few history lovers is that they treat their subject something like a third wife in the Taliban high country — which is to say the whole story is their private girl, thank you very much.
I saw this article in the endless stream of news items about our show release, and I had to comment (briefly) about their scholarly rush to judgment, because it comes from people who should know better–the guardians of the very Portsmouth Gazette that proves their commentary wrong.   It seems they objected to the notion of British soldiers being anywhere in New Hampshire except Portsmouth.
Well if they had bothered to read their own paper (heah, I know it’s a pain to look up the old issues),  they would have found multiple instances of both British deserters and the soldiers who pursued them.
I guess there are some truths you can only discover out here in glamorous Monrovia.
